Ano Nuevo State Park

Welcome to Ano Nuevo State Park, a breathtaking coastal sanctuary nestled along the shores of central California. Home to one of the most fascinating marine mammal populations on the planet, Ano Nuevo is renowned for its thriving elephant seal colony.

As you step onto the pristine beaches of Ano Nuevo, you'll find yourself immersed in a world where nature reigns supreme. The park's rugged coastline, dotted with windswept dunes and towering cliffs, provides the perfect backdrop for observing these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.

Every winter, thousands of northern elephant seals return to the shores of Ano Nuevo to breed, give birth, and molt. Witnessing these massive marine mammals in action is an unforgettable experience, as they engage in captivating displays of dominance, courtship, and maternal care.

Guided tours led by knowledgeable park rangers offer visitors a unique opportunity to learn about the fascinating behavior and biology of elephant seals while respecting their fragile ecosystem. Whether you're an avid wildlife enthusiast or simply seeking a tranquil escape into nature, Ano Nuevo State Park promises an unforgettable adventure filled with wonder and discovery.

I have only two tips for those looking to photograph these fantastic beasts:

1) They’re more active in the morning (until about noon). They still jostle around and get in wrestling matches in the afternoon, it just happens less frequently.

2) Don’t let foul weather deter you - I found them to be even more active in the rainy and stormy weather that kept most other visitors away. But beware, the nature of the beach area means strong coastal winds can gust over 40mph, enough to force you to walk diagonally. There were also lots of downed trees and branches. Be aware of your surroundings at all times, listen to the rangers, and stay safe out there!
